Albany, N.Y. (WHAM) – Under a new law signed Monday, some vehicles with tinted windows could fail their New York State vehicle inspection.
Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law Monday. The bill requires any auto shop performing vehicle inspections to fail vehicles with an illegal tint level.
The law stipulates that windshield and front side windows must allow no less than 70 percent of outside light to pass through. The law also applies to the rear window, unless the vehicle has outside rear-view mirrors on both sides.
The bill was passed by the New York State Assembly in May, then by the Senate in June.
It is illegal to sell, offer for sale, or install glass that does not comply with this law. It is illegal to operate a vehicle with glass that does not comply with this law.
